Achieving the Perfect Gun Fit: The Key to Better Shooting

We know that achieving the perfect gun fit is essential for improving your shooting accuracy and comfort. A well-fitted gun can significantly enhance your performance and reduce the risk of injury. This post discusses how to ensure your shotgun fits perfectly and the benefits it brings.

A properly fitted gun aligns naturally with your body, allowing for better control and accuracy. A well-fitted shotgun should feel like an extension of your body, fitting so well that you hardly notice it. This seamless integration between shooter and firearm is crucial for achieving consistent results.

Steps to Achieve the Perfect Gun Fit:

  1. Length of Pull: The distance from the trigger to the end of the buttstock should match the length of your forearm, ensuring comfortable and stable handling. Adjusting the length of pull can help prevent strain and improve shooting accuracy. There is a sense of comfort we are looking for here. While many subscribe to the rule of 2 fingers, it is not the end all.
  2. Drop at Comb and Heel: The drop at comb is the vertical distance from the line of sight to the top of the stock at the comb. The drop at heel is the vertical distance to the top of the stock at the heel. These measurements affect how the gun aligns with your eye and point of impact which is crucial for accurate shooting. Some may like a shotgun that shoot 60/40, 50/50 etc. Find what works for you in the discipline you are shooting ie trap, skeet or sporting clays to name a few. Adjusting these measurements helps in achieving proper alignment.
  3. Cast: The cast of the stock is another important factor. Cast refers to the sideways bend of the stock, either to the left or right. This accommodates your shoulder and cheek positioning. A professional gun fitter can adjust the cast to suit your build, ensuring a comfortable and natural fit.
  4. Pitch: The angle of the buttstock in relation to the barrel. Proper pitch ensures that the gun fits securely into your shoulder pocket, providing stability and control. Decreasing muzzle flip and face slap for the shooter is key. Adjusting the pitch can help reduce recoil and improve shooting comfort. Ultimately recoil is the enemy.

Consider visiting a professional gun fitter who can make precise adjustments to your shotgun. They use specialized tools and techniques to measure and modify the gun to fit your body perfectly. A professional fitting session can provide valuable insights and lead to significant improvements in your shooting performance.
